Supplements, bars and powders are a multi million dollar industry, and growing rapidly every minute of every day. With so many options out there, how do you know what to choose?

Best advice, don’t. Just eat real food. And by real, we don’t mean a packet of tim tams. We mean whole, unprocessed food – fruit, veggies, lean meats, fish, nuts, seeds and legumes. You are sure to be getting enough vitamins and minerals if you’re consuming all the right stuff. If you’re afraid you’re not, take a visit to your GP to get some general blood work done. If you’re deficient in anything, they will let you know how to supplement.

If you’re really struggling to get your protein intake in (vegetarians, for example) then a protein powder might be a good idea. But for the average Bear, you’re probably getting enough if you’re including a bit of real protein at every meal and snack. Protein bars- be careful with them. They are generally loaded with chemicals, sweeteners, thickeners and preservatives that are very irritating for the gut and can create false satiation signals to the brain. Many people find they get a digestive disturbance especially with the “low carb” bars sweetened with heaps of chemicals.

And then there’s fat burners. They really don’t even deserve their own paragraph they are such rubbish. Just don’t bother, Don’t even consider these “magical” fat burning pills. They are a waste of money and time. Full stop.

Food really is medicine, you just have to pick the right ones. Vitamins and minerals are just as important as carbs, fat and protein. The best way to keep all of this in balance is to stick to the outsides of your supermarket rather than in between the aisles. Eat your greens, just like mama told you to! tag
