Health Packed Green Smoothie Recipe!

I never thought I’d be the green smoothie type…. But here I am! My health has taken a bit of a back seat the last few months so I’ve recently been on a mission to prioritize my overall well-being. I haven’t exercised in almost 4 months so my nutrition has really had to be on point, and my portions have had to be controlled.

Something I’ve noticed over the last few months is that general anaesthetic and antibiotics really take a toll on your skin, hair, nails and complexion. I’ve noticed my hair is dry, my scalp is flaky, my skin in general is not as smooth and it’s also VERY dry, and my nails are brittle (thanks SNS for saving the day). So, I thought I’d take the matter into my own hands and come up with some ideas on how to get these things back on track. Bring in… the green smoothie!

First off, I'm going to go over some of the amazing benefits of the ingredients in this smoothie.

CHIA SEEDS- Chia seeds are high in fibre, Omega 3 fatty acids, is a known anti-inflammatory and the oil from chia is very hydrating.

CASHEW MILK- Cashews are high in selenium, which is great for skin.

CAULIFLOWER- High in vitamin C which is required for cell and tissue repair.

RASPBERRIES- High in vitamin C, and also contains anthocyanin which is pigment that makes the skin look brighter.

BANANA- Vitamin A which restores moisture.

DATES- High in Vitamin C and D (and important for some sweetness ;) )

SPINACH- A nutritional powerhouse! A wonderful source of iron, folate, chlorophyll, Vitamin E, magnesium, Vitamin A, fibre, plant protein, and Vitamin C. Due to their antioxidant abilities, Vitamins C, E, and A are especially great for your skin.

COLLAGEN PROTEIN- The most abundant protein in your body. Nourishes your skin, strengthens your bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles. Also benefits elasticity and hydration.

HAWAIIAN SPIRULINA- Contains 18 different amino acids that help rebuild cells, helps the body fight free radicals, and promotes quick elimination of dead cells. The vitamin and mineral list for spirulina is way too long to list here!

INULIN- A prebiotic, increases the diversity of healthy bacteria on your skin, high in fiber and keeps skin hydrated.

PB2- High in protein and tastes yummy ☺

CACAO- Rich in flavanols that protect the skin.

Now I don’t know about you… but I love a thick and creamy smoothie but I didn’t want all the extra carbs that come with heaps of banana and frozen yogurt. I decided to get creative and source out some key ingredients to make my smoothie just the way I like it.

First off… you’ve gotta soak your chia seeds. I soaked them in unsweetened cashew milk for about an hour before I made my smoothie.

Next, the frozen stuff and my secret ingredient… frozen cauliflower!! Yes it seems weird but I promise you can’t taste it and this, plus the soaked chia seeds, make it sooo smooth and creamy! I couldn’t imagine my smoothie without it now! I also add in half of a frozen banana, half a fresh medjool date and a handful of raspberries. I blend all these together before I add my powders of choice and of course the green stuff. If it gets sticky, just add water.

After that, we add the fresh spinach. You have to pack in as much as you can possibly smoosh into the cup. Blend again and add water as needed. Then we can finish it off with the powders – now these are just MY personal choices for flavour and my health goals. You can add whatever you like! I’ll put in a tablespoon of collagen protein, a tablespoon of PB2, a teaspoon of spirulina, a teaspoon of inulin, and a tablespoon of Woolworth’s cacao & mint latte mix

Blend blend BLEND and voila!! A delicious green smoothie! It tastes a little “earthy” at first but by the second time I made it, I was addicted to the taste. It’s not too sweet which I like and it is CRAZY filling. One thing to note is that this smoothie has about 15 grams of fiber so if you’re going to chug this, you’re also going to need to chug a lot of water the rest of the day otherwise you’re gonna get a little “backed up”… if ya know what I’m saying.

While we’re talking about fibre- I’ll let you in on a little tidbit of info when it comes to skin health. If you don’t ingest enough fibre, bile (aka poop), which should be excreted from the body, is reintroduced right back into the body. This leads to a build-up of toxins and it also creates an inflammatory environment. This allows skin conditions like acne, flaky skin, clogged pores, psoriasis and eczema to thrive. No thanks. I’ll take my fibre and 3 litres of water, please!

Now, back to this little work of art... if you’ve got some time on your hands, get creative, make it pretty and create your own smoothie bowl. Food is so much more enjoyable when it looks so healthy and palatable, don’t you think?

I've noticed with the addition of this smoothie in my everyday routine I've been able to cut back on a couple cups of coffee and I am able to sustain a full belly and plenty of energy throughout the morning and early afternoon.
